PhotoDynamic Therapy for Acne

The most recent advance in the treatment of acne is called Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). This exciting new procedure is now available for the treatment of active acne as well as older acne scars. It will also make your skin smoother and softer

Acne results from obstruction and inflammation of the sebaceous glands, caused in part by the acne bacteria (p. acnes).  PDT inactivates the bacteria, helps unclog the pores and helps shut down the sebaceous glands in the skin.  Prior to Photodynamic therapy, acne was typically treated with systemic antibiotics or Accutane with the potential for a number of systemic side effects.  Photodynamic therapy provides a viable alternative for the treatment of acne.

Photodynamic Therapy for acne consists of an initial facial scrub, followed by the application of a clear solution of Levulan to the skin.  This is a painless procedure.  It is then left on for 30 to 60 minutes in our office. The Levulan is converted into a powerful photosensitizer that is then activated for 10-15 minutes with a specific wavelength of light called a BLU-U.  Since the Levulan is preferentially absorbed by the sebaceous glands of acne as well as photo-damaged cells of the face, activation of the Levulan destroys the abnormal glands and cells as well as the acne bacteria.  The Levulan will also target enlarged oil glands and rosacea. Skin oiliness is decreased and the appearance of pores is minimized with an improvement in skin texture.

Levulan has been used extensively for treatment of a variety of different skin conditions, and it is approved by the FDA for Actinic Keratoses.  Levulan is a 20% solution of Aminolevulinic acid ( ALA ).  ALA is a natural substance found throughout your body, as it is a precursor for hemoglobin synthesis.  Therefore it is a “natural” product found in all humans.

The downside of Photodynamic Therapy for Acne includes facial redness and peeling for several days after treatment.  Jane Iredale makeup can be used to hide redness and provide excellent sun-block protection. You should avoid sun exposure for 36 hours after your treatment.

The advantage of Photodynamic Therapy for Acne is rapid treatment of acne lesions without oral medication.  The skin appears refreshed and younger following these treatments, although some individuals experience a slight temporary flare of the acne in the first 4-14 days after treatment. We suggest 2-3 treatments at 3-week intervals to obtain optimal results.  There are no systemic side effects.
