Day of Treatment

bulletIt is very important to remain indoors and avoid direct sunlight. Even standing or sitting by a bright window can re-activate the Levulan. If you must go out wear a thick layer of sun block containing titanium dioxide or zinc oxide and wear a wide-brimmed hat. Inappropriate light exposure after treatment will cause immediate burning and stinging. It will also delay healing and create a more intense reaction.
bulletElevate your head on two pillows to reduce eyelid swelling.
bulletTake analgesics such as Tylenol or Advil if necessary.
bulletApply ice packs to the treated areas to keep the area cool and alleviate discomfort and swelling. Swelling can be evident around the eyes and is usually worse in the morning.
bulletWash gently and pat dry. DO NOT RUB YOUR FACE.
bulletApply cold aloe vera gel to help with the burning after using the cold packs. Use DML lotion, CeraVe cream, or Biafine topical emulsion for a light moisturizer if your skin becomes tight and dry.

 Day 2-7

bulletAvoid sunlight and try to remain indoors on Day 2 and 3. The photosensitivity to sunlight is usually gone 36 hours after treatment, but may last as long as 48 hours.
bulletYou will experience increased redness, tenderness and swelling that feels hot like a sunburn the day after treatment. Stay away from bright light on Day 2.
bulletContinue to apply ice or cold packs as needed to alleviate discomfort and swelling. Aloe vera gel may also be helpful for burning. Any discomfort usually subsides by Day 3. You may take a warm (not hot) shower. Pat dry and do not rub your face.
bulletCool, dilute vinegar soaks or spray may be used for additional soothing. Mix 1 Tablespoon white vinegar with 8 ounces cool water. Apply with a clean cotton cloth for 5-10 minutes every 2-4 hours as desired.
bulletThe skin will feel dry and tight. Continue the sunscreen daily and moisturizer as needed. As the burning subsides and the dryness increases try a heavier moisturizer such as Acid Mantle Cream.
bulletIf peeling occurs, DO NOT pick, scratch, or rub the skin off. This may cause more irritation and more peeling or scaring.
bulletThe area may be red for several days.  Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup is an excellent concealer and sun block
