Facial Vein Removal
A common problem for many individuals is the gradual development of small discrete red or blue blood vessels on the face, most noticeable about the nose and cheeks. This can occur in patients with rosacea or it can be a result of a genetic tendency and made worse by sun exposure. This problem is seen commonly in people of northern European ancestry. These small spider-like facial veins can be treated easily using an electrosurgical device that acts much like a laser. A tiny needle is inserted carefully into the vein and an electrical current is transmitted to the vessel which cauterizes the vein. There will be small crusts (scabs) for a few days where the needle was inserted, but these heal rapidly without scarring if not disrupted. In a week the veins that were treated are gone. This works best where there are discrete, small blood vessels but is less effective if there is generalized redness of the face. For this there are IPL treatments. Preparing the area to be treated with a topical anesthetic cream such as LMX-4, with or without saran wrap occlusion helps with the moderate but short lived discomfort of the procedure.
