Botox® Cosmetic Injections for Wrinkles and Hyperhidrosis
The problem - Wrinkles and frown lines:After years of squinting and frowning, the muscles of facial expression can produce unattractive wrinkles that can make a happy and attractive individual appear tired, angry, or older than their years. These lines are particularly apparent between the eyebrows, bridge of the nose, forehead and at the corners of the eyes. BEFORE BOTOX
The solution - Botox:Frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow's feet can be softened and improved with injections of Botox Cosmetic. This revolutionary new treatment can produce profound effects with minimal side-effects and no need to take time off work (as with resurfacing and deep peeling techniques). Botox is a medicine that blocks the impulse from the nerve to the facial muscles that produce the unwanted wrinkles. When a very small amount of Botox is injected into the target muscle, it no longer contracts and the wrinkles disappear while the remainder of the untreated facial muscles function normally. Since Botox is administered with very fine, small needles, no sedation or local anesthetic is required; most patients, if having even minimal discomfort, compare the sensation to a small insect bite. The blocking action of Botox injections for wrinkles lasts up to three to five months. Re-treatment is indicated when frown lines begin to reappear. AFTER BOTOX
About Botox:Botox (Botulinum toxin) is a purified protein which, when in a highly diluted form and injected in very tiny amounts, reacts with only the targeted area causing a local relaxation which blocks the muscle's ability to contract. The result is relaxation of the squinting or frowning movements which lead to unwanted lines and wrinkling. In the case of hyperhydrosis treatments, Botox acts to block the nerve to the sweat gland, thereby inhibiting production of excessive perspiration. Botulinum toxin has been in use since the early 1980s to treat disorders such as lazy eye, uncontrolled blinking and eye ticks and is a safe and effective means of correcting various muscle and neurologic disorders as well as unwanted furrows, lines and excessive perspiration. Side effects:Typically side effects are minimal and are usually related to the local injection; soreness and bruising may occur although this is fairly uncommon. The patient will be asked to refrain from rubbing, pressing or massaging the treated areas for several hours after injection. In rare cases, headache or slight weakness of nearby muscles may develop. Because the effects of Botox are completely reversible, any side effects are temporary. Preparing for your Botox anti-wrinkle treatment:We recommend that patients avoid the use of aspirin for at least one week prior to treatment. After the procedure you should maintain an erect posture and not manipulate the area for four hours after treatment as this may cause the medication to spread to muscles other than the targeted ones. You should exercise the muscles every minute or so for the first two hours or so after treatment as the medication has been shown to be more effective and remain in the targeted area when the injected muscles are active during that first hour or two. The "relaxed" results will not be effective immediately but will be evident within seven to ten days after treatment. Please call our office for an appointment to discuss this procedure. The problem - Excessive perspiration:Botox can help patients with other problems as well. Hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating of the underarms, palms and soles of the feet are not uncommon. Heavy perspiration production in the axilla (underarm) is the most frequent complaint among patients with hyperhidrosis. Laundry and dry cleaning costs as well as concerns about appearance and odor are but a few of the concerns shared by individuals seeking a solution to their perspiration problems. The solution - Botox:Botox acts to dry up the sweat glands of the skin by blocking the nerve that activates these glands. The most frequently treated area is the underarm although the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet can also be treated as well. One treatment may provide several months of relief and can be repeated once or twice a year to maintain dryness.
