TOPICAL ANESTHESIA
The discomfort from a variety of procedures can be minimized using a topical anesthetic. Popular topical anesthetics include the prescription product called EMLA and the convenient over-the-counter product called LMX-4. LMX-4 is somewhat easier to use then EMLA as it does not require saran-wrap occlusion and LMX-4 is available without a prescription. For your convenience we offer LMX-4 for sale at our front desk. When applied to the skin for one hour, LMX-4 can help to eliminate much of the discomfort from procedures such as laser surgery, facial vein destruction, acne surgery and needle stick. If EMLA is used, the cream needs to be applied relatively thick (approximately 1/8 inch) and covered with plastic so that the white cream is visible under the saran-wrap. This must be left in place on the area that we are treating and worn into the office (we do our best to minimize your public waiting period.) The saran-wrap and the EMLA will be removed in our office just prior to the procedure as the numbing effect is short lived.
